Design and Purpose

The purpose of this ident is to promote the channel as you can see the channels name and website all over the ident which constantly reminds the audience of the channel they are watching and it reminds the audience where to go to catch up if they miss a show (through displaying the website url) which keeps a sense of brand loyalty. It is also trying to sell the program to the target audience as the program is don't tell the bride and it has a lot of things you would expect at a wending e.g. shoes, lipstick, taxis, and dancing. It is also targeting the audience because the ident is set out like a typical night on the town like Piccadilly circus has been turned into a night club so it appeals to the young audience who have life styles like that. This ident could also possibly be made to compete with other channels as it is quite jazzy and upbeat and it will draw people in which might give bbc3 that edge that other channels might not have especially with younger audiences. The bbc3 ident is being used to brand the channel as it has colours related to the logo are all over the ident like the pink and purple colours which are predominantly used in the BBC logo and the logo and the website url is shown in the ident. This ident helps the channel stand out as the music is quite up beat and funk also the ident is visually stunning so it really stands out. This ident is also used to inform people about what is on next through a voiceover why the ident is playing. It has the same layout as the bbc4 ident where the music plays first then the voiceover is used. This ident is primarily used to try and keep audiences interested thus making keeping them watching the channel, which makes the channels views, go up. This is done by the visual graphics and extravagant colours that appeal to young peoples nightlife. The BBC 3 ident is also used for segmentation to breakup the programs so it gives the audience a bit of break before the next program starts, so the audience can use this time to collect their thoughts on the program they've just watched. The ident is very busy as there are many different things going on at the same time e.g. people dancing, the taxi driving, the website url flashing up on the announcement board and people walking around, the ident is produced like this to keep it entertaining and to make sure it seems like it will be over quickly. This ident is also very informative as it tells the audience what is going to be on now and what will be on after next then it gives the audience a little bit of information about the next show. The tempo of this ident is quite fast paced as even though it is 21 seconds long it feels fast as there is a lot going on visually and audio wise also the audience is given a lot of information in such a short amount of time.
The ident is promoting the channel by showing what the channel is about and what it aims to do e.g. it shows a library of books in the ident so to me it suggest its trying to inform and educate its audience who are an older audience who are adults and older people who are considered knowledgeable people but they want to increase there knowledge and still want to learn new things. When this type of audience was younger and went to school they probably learnt a lot of things in a library so it is understandable while the BBC would choose to use a library in their ident. It is also trying to target its audience by sneakily suggesting to people who likes books should watch their channel. The ident also in some ways brands the channel and gives it an identity possibly as a very informative channel that is quite relaxed and slow compared to bbc3 that is for teens which is very fast and always on the move with its comedy. This ident is probably mainly used as segmentation to break up programs but also as a filler. However you could argue it is also advertising the channel through the use of the logo and brand colours but that is its secondary objective as it is mainly focused on explaining what programs the channel delivers. The colours are very out their and bright however to some extent they are dull and boring when you look closer, this is predominately because the channels audience is not a very visual audience and they don't care for big flashy graphics and bright colours like a young audience all they really care about is the content. For example the Liberians clothes aren't very colourful and the ladder is very plain and so is the bookcase, also if you look even closer the books are always only one colour, which keeps the ident very simple and basic. The colours in the BBC 4 ident are quite toned down and they are very pastorally compared to the BBC 3 ident, which has more neon colours that are quite delicate, and appeal to young persons nightlife. The channels logo and type face is simple and is the average sought of standard with the black on white format, this type of logo appears to adults because of its nature. It is very dull with only two colours however they do stand out which is the most important thing. There isn't much to the music and sound track with this ident. There is a voiceover to tell people what program is on next but before that there is a non-diegetic soundtrack that lasts about 4 seconds which is like a little prep before the person announces the next program. This ident tries to appear as if it is busy but really there is not a lot is happening, all it is a Liberian soughing out a few books while on a ladder. The ident doesn't use any humour as the channel is a very serious channel and doesn't show comedy TV shows. The ident is active as there is something always happening but because only one thing is going on it is not busy at all. This ident is information led and it is aiming at informing people about the channel rather then entertaining people to try and persuade them to watch the channel. This ident's tempo and speed is quite slow as it is going at the pace of the slow music and at the pace of the presenter talking.
The purpose of this BBC video ident is to advertise that the BBC as a corporation that releases some of their programs on to video. It also promotes the BBC channels as it shows that its the BBC's so if someone's never watched the BBC they might watch a BBC video and think I know ill start to watch some programs on the BBC. This ident helps the BBC stand out from other channels because of its colourful, glowing retro colours. The ident is a bit like a filler just to take up time as it’s shown at the beginning and the end of a video but it’s also to remind people that its a BBC video because if they like it they will probably buy another one. It helps keep the audience entertained, as sometimes there is a long wait for the film to start. This ident is also about keeping the channel up to date with technology as it uses effects that would of been top range due in the 80's e.g. the glowing effect and the line effect where multiple lines are drawn at once. BBC Video is the distributor of pre-recorded material such as VHS and it is commercial so advertising to make money for the channel unlike other BBC services. In terms of colours the ident uses a range of different rainbow colours such as yellow, red, purple, green, blue, orange, pink, and white. It is done in a retro arcade style, which was the typical style for that time. Its animated so that all the rainbow colours are drawn towards the back of the screen to form the star then more colours come in to make up the BBC logo that is made up of 2 separate lines to make the font bold and stand out. In terms of soundtrack it is very retro and I think it sounds like a keyboard playing that goes up in pitch and tempo e.g. when you complete a stage on Mario. The design is very busy as there is always something going on the screen e.g. the colours is always shooting across the screen. It has some info e.g. the name of the company and who’s part of it e.g. BBC enterprises and British broadcasting corporation. This ident is more entertainment led then information led.
The purpose of the Cinemax ident is to advertise the channel or the programs they make which helps create brand loyalty because if they show this ident before multiple programs the audience will be reminded that these two, three or four programs that they really like are made by Cinemax so they will be more tempted to tune in and tune in more frequently if there are multiple programs they like which means they will become loyal to the channel and not just a separate program. This ident could be to compete with other channels as they might see the ident and think this looks cool lets see what programs they have.  The ident is also there to brand the channel so when people see that ident or logo they will recognise what this channel is and what programs they air. This ident can fill gaps and take up time because in between programs they might play the ident to remind people that their watching a Cinemax channel or program. It might also be an attempt to keep audience interested because if they’ve watched there program they might be tempted to switch off then they see the ident and think oh ill wait to see what’s on next. This ident shows that the channel is up to date particularly with technology even if they don’t show new programs as the ident uses 3d technology and that is the latest state of the art technology. This ident isn't that colourful as it only consists of 2 or 3 colours blue, white and grey/silver so in my opinion it looks a little dull but the colours have good contrast. At the beginning the ident a lens flare is used to add effect and make the ident look interesting some times they use them at the start of programs e.g. news programs. The logo/type face is interesting as they’re like a bunch of giant mints/smarties but in 3d form. Then when you look at the part of the font that says max its like it goes inwards and there is a hole in the font a bit like a black hole. The soundtrack on the Cinemax sounds like a 10 clock news program opening. The soundtrack is quiet soft but funky at the same time so that appeals to the audience. The ident isn't that busy as it only has a few balloon mint things that float around in a blue sky but then it is busier then it first appears as they float right up to the screen all the time and something is always moving. The ident gives very little information it only tells the viewer who’s channel or program it is. The speed/tempo is slow and relaxing which works well as the people that watch their shows are probably very laid back. This ident is more led by entertainment then it is by information, which is better as Cinemax produce a lot of action TV shows.
The purpose of this ITV ident is partly to promote the channel as it includes the itv2 logo so when people watch the ident it reminds them they are watching itv2 so next time they will always remember to tune in to catch the programs they like. This itv2 ident is also used to promote the channel to its audience as a channel that focuses on a female audience that is young maybe around the age of 16-35. This is clearly shown because of the bright colours that are used which are integrated with interactive visuals that keep the audience entertained. The interactive visuals help promote the channel to the audience by incorporating everyday objects that are associated with females such as jewelry, makeup, champagne, shoes, bags and mirrors which will appeal to the audience very well especially as they are objects that are used so frequently by the target audience. This ident has also been made to compete with other channels as you get other channels that predominately focus on a female audience but they don't have ident's that are interactive as this that appeals visually as well as emotionally. This ident's purpose is also to show the channels identity as a very female driven channel where their programs predominantly focus on issues and genres that the female audience like to watch and are interested in. For example they have programs like the vampire diaries and gossip girl that focus on genres like romance, comedy but with elements of action; and they focus on issues like friendship, arguments, family issues and gossip which are all issues and problems this audience face and what they are stereotypically interested in. This ident has also been created to inform people what is on next while giving them a little bit of additional information about what the next show is about. The itv2 ident is good at segmentation as it breaks up the programs to give the audience a bit of a break in between while allowing the channel to advertise itself to ensure maximum success in ratings. Due to the amount of stunning visual effects and the modern upbeat soundtrack I would argue the ident keeps the audience entertained thus keeping the audience watching. This ident is very up to date in terms of technology, which could potentially give it an edge over itv2’s competitors, and it allows them to create an ident almost without limits in terms of creativity. In terms of design there is a range of different colours used that are a mostly bright modern colour in order to keep the ident relevant to the audience. The itv2 logo is quite basic as it is only made up of two colours however they rarely change the logo in order to keep continuity which helps brand and promote the channel to its audience. A lot of the design for this ident has been done through animation which has been made up of 3 or 4 layers, what is interesting about this ident is the way they have animated the nail varnish into a kind of paint like effect so that there all objects that stem of the nail varnish that are related to the channel and the audience. The soundtrack for the itv2 is very upbeat and funky and it seems kind of techno as if its been designed digitally on a computer. This ident is very busy as there is a lot going on particularly with the animation as it is made up of several layers that has several different feminine objects that stem of the main part of the nail varnish animation. This ident is designed so that it delivers the information that is deemed important and relevant to the audience such as what program is on next with a brief summary. The ident’s design appeals to a young audience as it is very high-tech which allows it to be visually stunning and interactive which really sells it to the audience. The tempo of this ident is quiet balanced as it doesn't feel really fast predominately due to the long narration but it also doesn't feel really slow as the animation keeps us entertained throughout the whole of the ident. In terms of whether the ident is entertainment led or information led again I would argue it is balanced as the entertainment value is just as important as the information value within this ident.

Limitations And opportunities

This ident has the opportunity to target its audience because in the ident it shows what typical night life in London is like and that’s the sought of the scene the BBC 3 audience would go to. It also targets the audience as in the ident it shows props that are related to weddings such as shoes and lipstick, which relates to the program that is up next. This ident also expresses the visual identity of the channel as the make colour used in the ident is purple which is the colour of the BBC 3 logo. The BBC 3 logo is also present to help create an identity for the channel. This ident is good at incorporating the latest technology to help animate the ident and to make the channels key features blend into the scene. The ident is slightly limited in its target audience as it is only mainly targeting audiences that like weddings then the wider target audience of BBC 3, which are teenagers. The ident is slightly limited by the channels brand, as BBC 3 always has to use the same primary colours.
This ident targets its audience well as it shows the typical things that people are interested in that watch the BBC 4 channel which would be books and information. It also appeals to the audience and sets the mood because it is slow and not over the top unlike BBC 3 because its audience are people that are not interesting in action or entertainment just a good informative documentary so they can expand their wealth of knowledge. The ident targets its audience by having an informative ident, which is what the channel is all about it also upholds the channels identity. The ident is limited as it can only include a few themes because it has a very limited audience that is primarily interested in information. The ident is limited also by the channels identity, as BBC 4 has always been slow and dull while being informative. So because this ident is informative it is long but ident's don't tend to feel long even if they are because of the entertainment but because BBC 4 ident is not entertaining it have a big dis advantage compared to other ident\s but at least it targets it audience.
The CITV ident is aimed at children you can tell this because it’s been animated look like a cartoon and sound like a cartoon e.g. the stretching sound. It is also very short so that the children don't get bored and they can’t tell the children what is on next in case they forget or cant read. They have chose to only use three colours to keep it simple for children. The ident ironically looks a bit like a super hero badge, which appeals a lot to children. The typeface is bold and big so it stands out. This ident is probably used for several programs in order to keep continuity, which helps the audience build a relationship with the channel.
This film4 ident has the opportunity to target its audience as it has a set piece that is related to some of the genres of film shown on this channel in this case the ident shows a car chase which is related to action movies thus targeting action movie fans. This ident is a long ident nearly 30 seconds this gives the opportunity for the voiceover to tell the audience what is on next. This ident shows the visual identity of the channel near the end by showing the channels logo but by using the latest technology to split the screen up thus creating the film 4 logo, this is a very creative and unique way of doing things which appeals to its audience as they are use to similar effects in action films. It has the opportunity to have a series of different ident’s to be made to cover different genres which allows film 4 to advertise to there divers audience. A limitation however is that because the ident is full screen and takes up so much space there is no room to display additional information. If they included text on the bottom it wouldn't work cause it would clash with the background. Because of the uniqueness of the ident film4 has the ability to compete with other channels that show films as they will not have an ident as creative as this or they might not have one at all e.g. channels that don’t’ just show films probably don't have one. When the screen splits up to create the channel 4 logo there is the shots of the car chase but from multiple different angels which gives the ident a lot of shot variation, which in my opinion it almost brands the channel as a channel that knows a lot about film and a channel that is passionate about film because they base their whole ident around film whether it is the camera work or the scene's they choose to show.

The cbeebies ident has the opportunity to be aimed at young children as they use a very stereotypical blue and pink in the ident, which are the typical colours that young children like and are associated with. The cbeebies ident is very good at setting the tone and mood for the channel as it advertises the channel as a playful, fun-entertaining channel, which it is to little children. The cbeebies ident uses a soft catchy jingle soundtrack which is designed to be memorable for young children so that whenever they hear it they know cbeebies is on, the jingle is also like a prep to so when children hear it they are ready to watch some cartoons. The ident uses quite neutral colours so that none of them clash with each other. The cbeebies ident has chosen to use blobs to make the ident more children friendly and interesting, as they are associated with cartoony animated programs that they watch. A limitation could be that this ident is unnecessarily because even though it’s entertaining so it doesn't feel long I think they could squeeze the same amount in but in a shorter space. Limitation is it’s hard to come up with an original idea, as a lot of children’s shows are very similar.
The sky news ident is very good at setting the tone and mood because it gets people ready so that they are setup to hear announcements. The sky news ad is quite good at building up for a big climax as if what they have to say is really important so more people will tune in and watch. It has the opportunity to inform the audience what the shows about as it shows part of the world map thus suggesting it talks about news from all around the world. The sky news ident is limited as it does not clearly target any particular audience it is more of a heads up ident saying hey look everyone the news is on now. In my opinion i think the ident could do a better job at targeting its specific audience because if you look at the ident it just has a short intro to the programme while showing what topics are covered in the programme instead of adding something in their to target a specific audience e.g. pictures of political figures so it will target people interested in politics. The sky news ident is effective at being generic and including all different types of audiences in the ident because it incorporates/shows people what the show is about due in the ident through the use of special effects e.g. in the first one or two seconds it is quite cloudy and out of focus suggesting they will also have weather updates during the programme.
The fox wedding ident has some limitations for example it doesn't give the channel any identity and it doesn't tell/show people what channel the program they are watching is on. The ident is now virtually pointless for advertising the channel as the only thing the ident does is give the program its own identity so when they see the ident they know that program is on. The ident is very good at entertaining people because of the fancy flick book animations showing a happy married couple life cycle from the wedding day to having the first child and a few years beyond. In the ident they use props that are typically stereotyped with a wedding e.g. flowers and wedding cake this is so that the audience can instantly identify that this program is about weddings and because it also targets their target audience which predominately young women wanting the perfected wedding. The ident is slightly limited in design and style because of the target audience as the design is totally based on weddings so it only includes girly things like flowers and wedding dresses and pink colours because the target audience is young women. This ident has the opportunity to further entertain its audience through the sound effects and the soundtrack that is used: the music helps make the ident feel short and entertaining thus making it more appealing to the target audience.

Idents Comparative Analysis

The it4 sport ident appeals to its audience because it has realistic sound effects of different sports e.g. the sound of the car racing down the track. So when people hear these sounds they would recognise they are sports related and probably watch the channel if they are interested in sport so then they can keep up to date with their favorite sport. This ident is very informative as it tells the audience what is coming up next thus the audience could make the connotation that because the ident is very informative the commentators and sports experts on the channel will be thus making the viewing experience better. The itv4 sport ident uses state of the art technology to produce it because it is animated in 3d, which appeals to the audience as it shows sport in a creative fun animated way, which appeals to children of our generation. The ident feels fast paced even though its long to include extra information this is because of the sounds of the racing and the fans screaming because there teams scored so these are fast paced action moments which makes the ident feel fast paced. This ident has the opportunity to create a good identity of the channel as the number 4 that is used in the animation is the same colour and font as the itv4 logo so whenever they see that 4 or a letter in that same colour and font the audience will know its related to it4 thus making the channel easily identifiable. This ident is also very good at creating brand loyalty as the ident clearly illustrates that a range of sports are shown on this channel so the audience could potentially become loyal to the channel instead of just one program by watching more then one sport that they like on this channel.
The channel4 Paralympic ident is interesting because even though its a sport related ident like the itv4 one the style of the two are totally different. The it4 ident is fast paced and action packed where the channel 4 ident is much slower in pace and not as action packed. It shows how two different channels have decided to target the same sought of audience that are passionate about sport and support sport, but in two totally different ways. This ident appeals to its target audience by explaining what is coming up next so then the audience knows if they want to watch it or not so if their in to Paralympic sport they might watch it because the commentator says the shows related to the Paralympics. This makes sure they draw in the specific audience that their aiming for so they will only end up with people that like the program thus maximising there audience. The channel 4 ident also targets there audience by incorporating their logo into the background/cinerary in a very modern stylistic way which appeals to young children and teenagers which is the audience channel 4 want to get because most of them are really into sport and the Olympic slogan was 'inspire a generation'. Near the end of the ident some celebration music is played this could possibly be done to encourage people to watch the show and to put them in a positive mood before it starts, which might encourage more people to watch it. Unlike ITV 4 channel 4 focuses more on soundtrack then sound effects, this is done to help encourage a happy and celebration al mood before the program starts which is the Paralympics opening ceremony so they want people to be happy and celebration al.
These ident’s are very similar in aspects like the layout and length mostly because they are for the same channel however they are different in some ways e.g. the theme of the ident’s and the type of sound the ident’s use because they are for different genres. Both ident’s start of with different pictures which is related to the topic which are a bit like memory flashes e.g. in the crime ident it shows props like a murder weapon and some chemicals that are used to solve the crime and in the history topic one it shows images of things like planes dropping bombs and old scripts that are historical. Both of the ident’s are also around 30 seconds long and they follow the same layout in terms of what the ident shows first e.g. both of the ident first show images related to the topic for about 8 or 9 seconds then after that some text comes up and it focuses on the last picture shown for the rest of the duration of the ident while a sound track is played e.g. in the crime ident the word crime flashes up in white text and it focuses on a shot of a bullet hole through a car windscreen while showing the history channels logo on the left so the audience can remember the logo so when they see that logo they know there watching the history channel. The history ident does something similar the last picture it focuses on is some old scripture with the shadow of two hands holding something and in white text it comes up know the story again with the history logo on the left of the screen. In both ident’s while they're focusing on the last shot/picture they both get flashes of light on them e.g. the crime one has red and blue light flashes as it a police car is at the scene and the history ident has this red light flashing on it as if someone trying to read the scripture to be able to translate it. Also throughout the whole of both of the ident’s there is a graphic at the bottom with text on it saying the history channel again reminding people what channel they are watching. The soundtrack for both the ident is different even though you get a feeling of mystery with both of them they are different because with the crime one you also get a feeling of almost negativity and it feels pessimistic as if something bad has happened. But with the history one as well as that sense of history you get a sense of wanting to explore and excitement as if the audience want to uncover the past.

Target Audience For Different Channels And the Channels Ident

the recording programme i used did not record the visuals properly and when i played the video it was lagging and you could not see the ident properly so i just chose to upload the audio podcast. But i have embedded the videos of the ident above this podcast.
the channel 5 the gadget show ident appeals to its audience because it uses the latest technology to create stylistic 3d graphics which links to the programme as it is all about the latest technology and gadgets that are used in this day and age. This ident appeals to the target audience through the amount of information because in the ident it tells the audience exactly what will happen so they know a bit about the programme before watching it which is a good point to get the audience to watch the ident and while people are watching the ident to get the info the ident is also busy selling them the ident thus maximising the audience. The flashy graphics helps entice people to watch it particularly people that love colourful flashy out of the box ideas (which is the target audience of the gadget show) and i think channel 5 achieves this very well as it uses a range of colours and they create this cool morph effect so that the ident can constantly change e.g. it starts off as this holographic ball thing then it splits into lots of different particles and changes into a yellow cube. This ident also features the people that present the programme which means the ident is instantly recognisable by its audience thus i means every time they see the people in that ident they know the gadget show is on so the ident is very good at promoting the show.
This bbc arabic ident is very clever because it uses a funky catchy soundtrack to get peoples attention which is perfect as its to launch a new channel. This works well in circumstances like if someones not really watching the tv then they hear this soundtrack it would probably instantly catch their attention then they would turn round and watch it and realise its a new channel then they might think this looks cool so then there probably check the channel out. The ident is good at targeting its audience because it gives the channel an identity and helps people realise what they're watching so when they see all them shapes and glimmers of purplely glass looking shapes coming together to form the bbc logo they would be engaged in this very creative ident which is almost begging them to check out this new channel which is similar to what the channel 5 ident does. Thus this ident is help creating an audience for this new channel so when it starts they will already have an audience with minimal advertising. The ident helped target its audience by creating a stylish graphic of the globe which isn't just entertaining but informative as it suggests that the channel has current events and news on it.

Test Footage and Draft Idents

These are the 3 drafts all with alternative endings that i was going to get people to vote on there favourite one then use the most popular one for my final ident. however i made a 4th draft that proved to be more popular and it looked/sound better so i didn't use any of these. One of the drafts has an ending that is simple and not animated, but the other two are animated at the end, however one of them is animated better because in the first draft i animated i inserted the keyframes slightly wrong.

This is my test footage that contains the first lot of footage that i shot for my ident, overall the footage wasn't of great quality because it was out of focus and the camera was shaky so from this footage i learn from my mistakes and realised i needed to use a tripod even if it was hard to achieve the right angle needed.
